How should we govern our news ecology in the digital age?
Digital platforms bring several challenges to news production, distribution and consumption, ranging from concerns on the economic sustainability of this activity to questions regarding trust building and legitimacy. There is pressure on European policymakers to provide solutions to ensure a healthy news ecology. This Winter School offers seminars and debates on this topic and invites students to write their own manifesto on European news politics, to be published by the Euromedia Research Group.
Who can join
PhD and advanced Master students in the field of communication studies, political science and sociology.
Participation is subject to a selection process.

Fee
50 EUR per student
The fee covers accommodation for the whole stay in the hotel of the Bundesinstitut für Erwachsenenbildung, in Strobl (Austria), with full pension. It also covers cultural excursions included in the program.
The fee does not cover travel costs to Strobl, Austria.
NEW: a travel grant of up to 300 EUR is offered to students from universities that do not provide funding for this type of activity. See how to apply below. The scholarship will be provided as reimbursement and is subject to student approval in the selection process.
Program
The program was elaborated to enable studens to produce a “Winter Manifesto on European politics of news ecology beyond platforms”.
After admission, students will be asked to read one academic text (book chapter, journal paper etc.) and prepare a summary in advance.

- Working sessions for the manifesto writing, guided by Tales Tomaz, Josef Trappel and faculty staff
- Academic career counselling by all faculty staff

- Night snow walk through Strobl
- Salzwelten in Hallstatt
Application
Please send a motivation letter (max. 800 words) and your curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages) to [email protected] by 22nd November 2021. Selected students will be informed by 1st December.
NEW: students can apply for a scholarship that covers up to 300 EUR of their travel costs by sending a declaration from their supervisor clearly stating that their university does not provide funding for this type of activity. The declaration can be sent separately, but not later than the 22nd November 26th November, provided that the applicant already informs that will send the declaration.
